Sumptuously packaged in a gatefold card sleeve designed by Stephen O Malley (sunn 0)))), Eald-Ge-Streon (Beta-lactam Ring Records) is a seven-cycle-drone-concerto that delves deep into the inner psyche of the listener. Atmosphere abounds as waves of analogue sound wash over shores littered with avant references. Troum employ guitar, bass, voice, accordion, balalaika, flute, mouth organ, melodica, gong, field recordings and pre-recorded sounds to weave their tapestry of sound by hand. Call it dark atmospheric ambient industrial, call it transcendental noise, call it Tiefenmusik, if you will, but what ever you elect to call it, there were no samplers or computers involved in the process! Troum is the ancient German word for ‘dream’, and that’s possibly the best way to describe this listening experience: somnambulant. Haunting, evocative and expansive, this is womb music for astral projection, and only true space cadets should apply.

Beta-lactam Ring Records

Troum "Eald-Ge-Streon" lovingly reviewed at Brainwashed by Creaig Dunton

The
album consists of a variety of pieces that have been attempted or performed
over the past seven years, appearing here in their most finished states (as
finished as the artists can ever be satisfied with, that is). Opening
with "Elation," the stage is set with low end tones and higher frequency ringing,
crawling along at a slow pace and enshrouded in a tangible amount of reverb.
The following "Useque Sumus Lux" keeps the sub-30hz frequencies pegged out,
but throwing in rhythmic loops and a wider palette of noises. The piece
is a running contrast of loud synths and raw rhythms, yet gentle and delicate
ambient pastiches. Both "Eolet" and "Ecstatic Forlornness" keep the rhythms in
place, though the former is more buried and primitive in nature, while the latter
is much more commanding and clattering. "Ecstatic Forlornness" is based
on heavy elements and a lot of flanging and filtering, but the transitions between
effects are almost too direct and jarring, never allowing the piece to
hit its stride. The cover of Savage Republic’s "Procession" is similar,
but more old school organic in nature. The echoing production is still
present, but the allowance of more traditional rhythms and noticeable,
although highly obscured, vocals give it more of an early 1980s feeling rather
than oblique compositions."Dhanu-H" and the closing "Crescere" eschew the rhythms
for symphonic, sweeping elements of dramatic flair. Both could be the
score to a psychological drama, though the latter’s slow build from near silence
into rawer textures and musical loops might be a bit too jarring to work in
that capacity. Half of the first pressing of this disc includes a bonus
second CD, consisting of the 33 minute track "Abhuna," which continues the dramatic
ambience. Using all of the time allotted to it, the piece builds from
nothing into a slow, sparse piece of glacial drift and reversed tones, reaching
a warm and inviting conclusion instead of the expected raw and dark ending moments.
While the second disc isn’t as impressive as the main album tracks, it does
not detract from the experience either. This set comes packaged in the traditionally
beautiful Beta Lactam way, a heavy mini-gatefold jacket adorned with designs
by Stephen O’Malley that compliment the subtle, yet complex sounds contained
within very well. Considering it is more of a compilation of tracks rather
than an album in the traditional sense, the pieces work extremely well together
to form a coherent whole.
<table style="border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; However, “odd old jewels” perfectly fits the
contents. The basic tracks for the seven pieces were recorded “years ago,”
on an analog 8-track machine. Left unfinished, they have been used through
the 2000s as backing tracks for live performances, re-worked on, augmented,
and eventually spit-shined for this release. The resulting music is a bit
muddier in sound quality than usual Troum (lots of audio flapping,
although very well used and nicely framed by other sounds), but the music is
more involved, richer, and as taking as Troum’s music ever gets.
Scrutinized, the loops seem to disintegrate under the sheer weight of the
massed guitars, voices and field recordings, yet taken as a whole, the music
is surprisingly light, aerial and ecstatic. Highlights include the opener
and closer, “Elation” and “Crescere,” the latter an uplifting hymn,
plus “Dhânu-h,” whose massed build-up of guitars and percussions is
reminiscent of Godspeed You! Black Emperor-type post-rock, while
remaining pure Troum. It could be argued that the Industrial leanings of
Troum’s mother band Maeror Tri come forward more distinctly on this
release, but they were always there to start with. The first edition of
Eald-Ge-Streon (500 copies) comes with a bonus disc that includes the
33-minute “Abhuñâ,” a brand new track with better sound (obviously a
digital recording) and a more menacing demeanour that make it a nice
complement to the main set.

--
Francois Couture (for All Music Guide)
Critique, journaliste, réalisateur de Délire musical/Délire actuel (CFLX)
Reviewer, journalist, producer of Delire Musical/Delire Actuel (CFLX)

Monsieur Délire, portail du journalisme musical de François Couture
Monsieur Délire, Francois Couture's music journalism blog
http://blog.monsieurdelire.com

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:kifwxzu0ldfe

10 Ft.
